Is there always a Karen waiting to show up everywhere?
Karens seem to be a common occurrence, and a neighbor shared her story with her own Karen on Reddit. She goes around telling people where to park, when to paint their fences, or when they can have a barbecue in their own backyards. To avoid having issues with her, her neighbor asked her if she could repaint her side of the fence, since it needed painting. Karen said yes at first, but then apparently changed her mind and painted her side of the fence a completely different color. The neighbor went to finish painting their side of the fence, carefully not to spill anything on her side. That’s when Karen showed up again and claimed they had no right to do anything to the fence, not even paint. It sounded awfully close to a threat.
It’s very hard to win with people like that. The priority is to keep the peace in the neighborhood, but even by letting her do or say whatever she wants without any retaliation, she continues to bother everybody. If taking legal action is not a real option, there is not much more that can be done, except for establishing clear boundaries. People like that enjoy feeling they have control over everybody. It is only a matter of time until someone gets sick of her attitude and puts her in her place.
My family used to say that, no matter how crazy you are, you will eventually come across someone crazier. Maybe that’s what this lady needs: another neighbor who’s even more entitled and bossy, who’s not willing to take her attitude or put up with any kind of mistreatment or threat. Until then, this Karen will continue to act as she already does, and the rest of the neighbors will have to keep enduring it, or stand up to her as a group.
What should he neighbors’ next steps be: should they retaliate and take legal action or leave things alone?
