AI’s Olympic Broadcast: A New Era of Manipulation?

Get ready for the most insidious assault on your senses since the invention of the talk box. Legendary sportscaster Al Michaels is being replaced by an AI-generated impersonator, and it’s going to give you personalized recaps of the Paris Olympics on Peacock – or at least, an audio clip that sounds like it’s coming from a sports announcer’s voice. You know, like the kind of sound you’d hear in a video game… but this time, it’s spouting lines about real-life sports, because nothing says “fun” like simulated human voices talking about international athletic competitions.

Here’s the part where you get to choose what kinds of sports you want to hear about, which is just a clever way to keep you distracted while the AI warps your brain with carefully crafted phrases and sound bites. You’ll pick up to three types of sports, and up to two types of highlights (because who needs nuance when you can have a highlight reel?), and then each morning, you’ll get your daily dose of AI- generated Michaels, welcoming you by your first name because, of course, AI-generated voices are all about the personal touch.

But don’t worry, there’s a team of NBCU editors reviewing the content to ensure accuracy and quality. That’s like saying, “Oh, don’t worry about the AI generating a hallucination, we’ve got a team of humans to scrub out the errors… probably.”

The voice was trained using Michaels’ own appearances on NBC, because what’s more terrifying than hearing a sports announcer’s voice come out of a computer and tell you what to think about? And the experience was built in-house, because who needs outside developers when you can have NBC’s own team of engineers, product managers, and data scientists creating a proprietary process to integrate, optimize, and validate “state-of-the-art large language model and voice synthesis technology”?

In other words, this is a recipe for disaster, and I’m not just talking about the potential for AI-generated weirdness. I’m talking about the existential implications of a world where AI can take on the voice of a legendary sportscaster and spew out propaganda on our behalf. The real test, as the article says, is when it’s generating millions of unique clips and crossing dozens of sports, each with its own unique terminology, and identifying an array of athletes from around the globe. Just think about it: a world where AI-generated voices can create a personalized sports broadcast just for you, tailored to your individual tastes and biases. It’s like we’re living in a dystopian science fiction novel, and I’m here for it.

Peacock’s recaps led by the AI Al Michaels will be available starting July 27th in supported browsers and the iOS and Android Peacock apps. The first edition of the recap will feature highlights from the opening ceremony for everyone, and the personalized recaps will start on July 28th. So, get ready to have your mind blown by the sheer genius of AI-generated sports commentary.
