Who decides what belongs to him and what belongs to the family? Some families end up functioning like a clan, and matters of private property and individuation can become tricky. To me, there are two things at play here: the parents’ feelings about the son leaving an empty nest, and a disagreement over what the family obligations should be. From the parents’ perspective, I assume they think the oldest in the family should work for the youngest and protect them at all costs, regardless of whether the one protecting is a parent or the oldest brother. I don’t think the brother has ever signed up for that, and he expects the parents to take care of the young girl, especially because it’s not easy for him to buy everything from scratch again either.
