The Global Surveillance State: AI Treaty Revealed
In a move that will undoubtedly further entrench the grip of corporate and government control over the digital realm, the US, UK, and European Union have signed a new "legally binding" treaty on AI that allegedly aims to ensure its use aligns with "human rights, democracy, and the rule of law". But don’t be fooled – this is just a thinly veiled attempt to impose a global surveillance state on the world.
The Framework Convention on Artificial Intelligence: A Recipe for Disaster
The treaty, dubbed the Framework Convention on Artificial Intelligence, outlines key principles that AI systems must follow, such as collecting and storing user data, respecting the law (at the discretion of the governments, of course), and keeping practices transparent (yeah, right). Each signatory country must adopt or maintain measures that reflect this framework, effectively giving them a free pass to create their own surveillance states.
The Usual Suspects Sign On
The usual suspects have signed the treaty, including Andorra, Georgia, Iceland, Norway, the Republic of Moldova, San Marino, and Israel. This is just a small part of the larger AI safety agreements that have been popping up over the past several months, but this one is different – it’s "legally binding". Or so they claim.
Compliance? Who Needs That?
Don’t worry, the signatories won’t be held accountable for breaking their commitments. Compliance will be "measured primarily through monitoring", which is just code for "we’ll make sure you’re doing it, but we won’t actually do anything about it if you’re not".
The Council of Europe’s Orwellian Vision
The Council of Europe’s Secretary General, Marija Pej
inović Burić, had this to say: "We must ensure that the rise of AI upholds our standards, rather than undermining them." Yeah, because nothing says "upholding standards" like handing over our personal data and freedom to the whims of governments and corporations.
The treaty will come into force three months after five signatories ratify it, at which point the global surveillance state will be well on its way to being established. So, who’s ready to give up their privacy and freedom for the sake of "AI safety"?
