How important are your friends to you?
For many of us, our friends are some of the most important people in our lives. We want them to be around for our best moments and our worst. We want to share our happiness and our sorrows with them. We want to keep the bond between us intact through the years.
Because of that, it comes across as strange when others don’t seem to value their friendships as much as we do. A bridesmaid on r/bridezillas had an experience that proved to her that her best friend doesn’t value her as much as she thought. The two met for the first time because of their then-boyfriends, who are still best friends. One friend later got engaged and is currently about to get married, while the other friend, the bridesmaid, had a dramatic breakup. Since then, they had been planning the wedding together. The bridesmaid paid for the bachelorette party trip and got expensive presents, all to eventually have the bride tell her over dinner that she was no longer invited to the wedding.
You see, the groom’s best man is the bridesmaid’s ex-boyfriend, and they don’t want to make things awkward for anybody, so the bride and groom decided, at the last minute, that it wasn’t right for her to be there.
What a tremendous lack of loyalty. A bride is entitled to invite or uninvite anyone from her wedding; that’s for sure. But it is one thing to not invite someone because things could get awkward, and a very different thing when that someone is planning everything with her. She helped with the planning and invested a lot of money in things that weren’t for her. One would think that years of friendship buy you more than that kind of dismissal
For some reason, the bride’s excuse sounds fake. The ‘not wanting to make things awkward’ thing makes sense… Until you realize that wasn’t a problem for the bride or her friend at first. Many people have had sporadic encounters with their ex-partners and lived to tell the tale. We are all adults, and we know when and where we are not supposed to make a fuss about something. It doesn’t seem likely that the bridesmaid would have made a scandal over her ex being there; everybody can behave in a civilized manner, say hi politely, and enjoy the reception without making anything awkward for anybody. It has happened before, and it can happen again.
