When family money comes with unexpected expectations…

An inheritance can get complicated fast when relatives start deciding how someone else should spend it. After receiving $85,000 from his grandmother, one man was asked to give his brother $10,000 for a house down payment. He offered a formal loan instead, but his brother wanted a gift, arguing that helping family was what Grandma would have wanted.

This story is insane! First of all, everyone received the same amount of money (which is great), so they all got to choose what to do with it. Colin decided to buy a house with his wife, but realized they didn’t have enough for the down payment, which is fine and normal. The situation, however, starts to become weird when he asks his brother for an outrageous gift: $10,000 dollars from his inheritance.

As we can all expect, the OP refused and told him that he could loan him the money, but not gift it. It’s a whole other game: losing $10,000 because his brother cannot afford the house… why doesn’t Colin pick another house that’s within his limits? No, this is not what happened. The brother got mad because the OP was cold and didn’t respect what Grandma would have wanted, which is to help each other.

But this has nothing to do with help! We’re talking about a very expensive gift! If both brothers got the same amount of money, each of them should be able to do whatever they want with it, and that includes not gifting to each other, because we all know that’s not what Grandma would have wanted. I hope they can find a solution to this situation and that the conflict didn’t escalate too much.
