Citizens Stranded: America’s Wheels Grinding to a Halt by July 4th

The car dealership apocalypse is finally coming to an end as CDK Global limps back online after a pair of devastating cyberattacks that left thousands of dealerships in the dark. But don’t expect a hero’s welcome for the company, which has been slammed for its lack of transparency and haphazard response to the crisis.

“We’re just trying to get back to business as usual, one dealership at a time,” says Lisa Finney, a CDK Global spokesperson, in a statement that reeks of insincerity. “We’re hopeful that all dealers will be back online by the 4th of July, but don’t expect a parade in our honor anytime soon.”

CDK Global’s software is used by nearly 15,000 car dealerships, and the company’s failure to prevent the cyberattacks has left many feeling betrayed and abandoned. As a result, some dealerships have been forced to resort to ancient methods like pen and paper to manage their businesses.

CDK Global has already managed to bring a handful of dealerships back online, but it’s unclear how many more will be affected by the company’s botched response to the crisis. One thing is certain, however: the car dealership industry will never be the same again.
