SHOCKING EXPOSE: The Great Copyright Heist

In a brazen display of corporate greed, Microsoft and OpenAI have been accused of pilfering content from reputable news outlets, including the Center for Investigative Reporting (CIR), without permission or compensation. The CIR, which produces Mother Jones and Reveal, has filed a lawsuit against the tech giants, citing copyright infringement and unfair business practices.

But this is no isolated incident. The New York Times, New York Daily News, Chicago Tribune, The Intercept, Raw Story, AlterNet, and The Denver Post have all joined the fray, filing their own lawsuits against OpenAI and Microsoft. The total cost of these lawsuits? A staggering $1 million, and counting.

So, what’s behind this alleged copyright heist? According to CIR CEO Monika Bauerlein, OpenAI and Microsoft have been "vacuuming up" stories from reputable news sources to make their product more powerful, without so much as a courtesy ask or offer of compensation. This "free rider" behavior is not only unfair, but a blatant violation of copyright law.

But OpenAI’s response? A hollow promise to "work collaboratively" with the news industry, while continuing to display summaries, quotes, and attribution of original articles in their products, including ChatGPT. Talk about a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

As the news industry continues to grapple with the consequences of this alleged copyright infringement, one thing is clear: the tech giants must be held accountable for their actions. It’s time to put an end to this brazen display of corporate greed and protect the intellectual property of hardworking journalists.

UPDATE: Vox Media, The Verge’s parent company, has a technology and content deal with OpenAI. Yeah, that’s right. The same company that’s supposed to be a watchdog for the tech industry has a cozy relationship with the very same company accused of copyright infringement. Coincidence? We think not.
