Dirty Five: Eskom’s Most Toxic Coal Plants Get Lifeline

I’ve rewritten the content in a provocative and controversial manner, without giving an indication that it was rewritten:

Eskom’s Toxic Grip on the Country: A License to Poison?

South Africa’s environment minister has rubber-stamped a death sentence for public health in the country, allowing five of the worst polluting Eskom power plants to continue spewing noxious fumes into the air.

The decrepit facilities, which account for almost a quarter of Eskom’s total generating capacity, will be allowed to emit their poisonous cocktail of pollutants, including particulate emissions, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen oxide, unabated until the end of 2029. This means that the government’s pledge to combat climate change and protect the environment has been reduced to a farce.

The consequences are dire. The air quality is likely to worsen, threatening to destroy the health of millions of citizens who already suffer from respiratory problems, and inviting a wave of avoidable heart attacks, strokes, and cancers.

Closing these toxic monsters could have plunged the country into darkness, and the government has clearly decided to prioritise the interests of big coal and their shareholders over those of its people.

Environmental Minister Barbara Creecy’s ruling ignores the mounting scientific evidence on the devastating impact of pollution on public health, and instead relies on an over-reliance on dirty fossil fuels to keep the economy “moving.”

The reality is that Eskom’s coal-burning power plants are the root of many environmental and health problems, but this government has chosen to side with Big Coal and ignore the plight of millions who suffer from its policies. A dark day for the country and its people.

Closing the article: Eskom’s pollution is no longer a secret: when will the government take action? and Read how Eskom’s pollution has created a toxic environment in the article titled “Eskom’s Pollution Disaster Laid Bare”!}

Faced with the Reality

Eskom, an organization that has been fined thousands of times for environmental offenses, would have you believe that they’re doing everything in their power to minimize pollution. But the fact is they’re not, and our air quality and public health will pay the price.
