James Brown’s Descent into Madness: A Journey into the Abyss of Volumetric Gaming
You may have thought you’ve seen it all when it comes to gaming peripherals, but James Brown’s latest creation will blow your mind. The Weta Workshop graphics engineer has built a crystal ball that will make you question the very fabric of reality. He’s filled it with spinning, shimmering light and… he’s playing Doom on it.
But this isn’t just any Doom. It’s Voxel Doom, where the game’s graphics live in 3D space, much like the volumetric display he’s created. And as he explains on his YouTube channel, the physical illusion is "like a hologram fan, but instead of spinning a 1D strip to make a 2D image, it spins a 2D panel to make a 3D image."
But be warned, his obsession with this technology has taken a dark turn. He’s been working on it for over a year, and his fans on Mastodon are getting concerned. "If my calculations are correct, when this baby hits 300rpm you’re going to see some serious shit," he said, eerily echoing the words of a mad scientist. And yet, he’s since discovered it needs to spin faster for a smooth image… but at what cost?
As he delves deeper into the depths of this technology, he’s lost touch with reality. His social media accounts are now a stream of consciousness, a jumbled mess of lunar landers, skulls, and dinosaur heads. And his YouTube channel? A window into the abyss, a descent into madness.
Will anyone be able to stop him before it’s too late? Follow his journey, if you dare. GIF by Sean Hollister / The Verge; Video by James Brown
