The setup here is genuinely beautiful. Younger employees present a solution to a problem they identified, older employees take it home and study it over the weekend like it is a driving exam, come back Monday using it earnestly and carefully, and within three days someone is filing an HR complaint. The system lasted less time than most leftovers.
What actually happened is that tone indicators were never really about clarity. They were about control over how communication gets interpreted, which is a very different thing. When the older employees started using them correctly, it removed the ability to retroactively decide that any given message was hostile. And apparently that ability was load bearing.
The gif incident is the part that should be framed and hung in a museum. A young employee responds to a polite follow-up message with a gif of a man hitting a woman, then sends /j a minute later, as if the joke tag is a legal disclaimer that makes the whole thing fine. That is not a tone indicator. That is a threat with a footnote.
The deeper irony is that the whole premise was about older workers not understanding how tone works in digital communication. And then the generation that proposed the fix used it to send assault gifs and report people to HR for asking follow-up questions. The communication gap did not close. It just got new vocabulary.
