Google’s Dirty Secrets: Cookies Stay

Google: Screw you, privacy advocates!Google: Cookies? Who cares about your privacy?

The tech giant has officially ditched its plan to eliminate third-party cookies, citing the whining of advertisers as the main reason for this egregious betrayal of privacy.

Apparently, the company’s ” advertisers” are more important than users’ rights to privacy. How touching.

And now, instead of “deprecating” cookies, Google will introduce a “new experience” that allows users to “make an informed choice” – essentially, opting-out of any meaningful privacy control.

What this means is that users will be asked to give blanket consent for their personal data to be harvested by anyone who wants it – all under the guise of “protection”. How nice.

The betrayal of privacy advocates

“Google’s decision is a slap in the face to privacy advocates who have been pushing for stronger data protections,” said Lena Cohen, staff technologist at the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

This is exactly what critics had feared: Google’s priorities will always favor its advertising bottom line over the needs of its users.

The verdict: More data, more problems, for users.
