A dying man’s final plea was IGNORED. A father was told NO as his son took his last breath. This is America’s immigration system, and it is BRUTAL.
Wael Tarabishi, 30, spent his life fighting Pompe disease, a cruel illness that wastes muscles and attacks the heart. His father, Maher, was his lifeline—his sole caretaker for years. But in October, ICE snatched Maher away during a routine check-in. For months, the family BEGGED officials to temporarily release him. First, to provide the 24/7 medical care only he knew how to give. Then, just to say goodbye.
Their pleas were met with COLD, HARD SILENCE.
On the day Wael died, his last wish was to see his dad. His attorney raced to ICE, begging for a supervised hospital visit. The answer was a devastating NO. Days later, ICE again denied Maher’s release to attend his own son’s funeral. “A reflection of the tragic lack of humanity by those in charge,” his attorney, Ali Elhorr, blasted in a statement. Photos of the smiling father and son, now a haunting memory sourced from the family’s Instagram, @freemahertarabishi, underscore the loss.
This cruelty violates ICE’s OWN RULES, which allow escorted funeral visits. Why were they ignored? The family points to a shameless government smear. After public outrage, a DHS spokesperson darkly labeled Maher a “self-admitted member” of the Palestine Liberation Organization—a claim the family fiercely denies. Is this how they justify torturing a grieving father? By slapping a political label on him?
Without his father, Wael’s health SPIRALED. Hospitalized with sepsis, pneumonia, and infections, he was rushed to the ICU. “Without him, I cannot survive,” Wael said in a December statement. He was right.
They followed the rules. They showed up for every check-in. And they were rewarded with a nightmare. While bureaucrats hide behind statements, a man in a detention cell mourns alone, and a family burrows a son without his father.
This isn’t just policy. It’s a calculated lesson in who gets to be treated as human.
