When pushed to the brink, sometimes a bunch of workers all quit at once, leaving their employer to learn their lessons the hard way.

When bosses say, “If you don’t like it, you can leave,” they rarely realize how impolite they’re being toward their workers. The boss thinks that they’re being clever, almost teasing their workers, as if to say, “You have a safe and secure job here, are you really going to leave just because your feelings are hurt?” But to an already upset employee, that kind of phrase can really push them over the edge. Instead of sounding playful or cutesy, that phrase is dismissing every one of their complaints. It’s the boss’s way of announcing that their concerns don’t mean a thing. The boss is saying that they’ve heard the complaints, and they can’t be bothered to fix things. Too bad, too sad!

Leaving a job takes a ton of courage. It hasn’t been this hard to find work in decades, and we all know that in America, work is tied to your health, dental, and vision insurance. Quitting your job might mean that your daughter has to wait to get braces, or that you can’t go to the eye doctor to get new contact lenses. It can mean putting your housing situation at risk! Quitting doesn’t automatically guarantee you a fresh job by the end of the week, month, or even year. So when workers do walk out en masse, it’s hard for bosses to ignore just how principled they’re being. The risks are huge and the rewards are low, but you can’t just sit there forever letting your boss be entitled and impolite forever. Something’s gotta give.

One person shared that while working in a corporate position at a company in a downspiral, they and 40% of the others in leadership left in a month. Within 6 months, the number had risen to a 65% loss in personnel! Even if people don’t all quit at exactly the same time, a huge shift like that makes hiring new workers hard. While everyone is pouring out the door, there’s no one to train the newbies! When that happens, if you’re a worker remaining behind, you’re just left with your mouth agape, watching as the company craters in real time.
