Security work can be so boring. Stuck in limbo between hyper-vigilance and falling asleep, security guards, particularly on the night shift, need a special affinity for sustained attention.
A looong time ago, I worked a night shift. It was a real graveyard burner at a college coffee shop. On the weekdays, the shop closed at 1 AM, and let me tell you, there were only about two customers who strolled by the windows between the hours of 5 and 9, and after that, it was a ghost town. Occasionally, during finals week, things would pick up, but otherwise, it was the most boring shift out there.
Yet, my coworkers and I found that the only way to pass the time on that shift was to watch Netflix. We literally watched TV on shift because it was the only way to stay awake, so when this security guard decided to work on his novel during their shift, at least their eyes were staying open for something. In my opinion, as long as clocked-in employees can still manage to do their job, who cares what they do in the moments in between? What difference does it make to management, apart from feeling like they’ve lost control of the workers?
No, you haven’t lost control of anything; you’re just lucky enough to have a multitasking worker who not only crushes their workload but has the bandwidth to have a work hobby on the side at the same time. Count your blessings, bossman.
