Dyson’s New Headphones: A Betrayal of Innovation and a Cash Grab
In a shocking move, Dyson has abandoned its commitment to innovation and instead released a new pair of over-ear headphones that are nothing more than a rehashed, overpriced version of what’s already on the market. The OnTrac, as they’re called, are a far cry from the revolutionary Zone headphones that preceded them, which at least had the decency to filter the air.
The OnTrac’s lack of air filtration is just the tip of the iceberg. These headphones are a blatant cash grab, with a price tag of $500 that’s laughable considering the competition. Bose, Sony, Apple, and Sonos all offer high-quality headphones at a fraction of the cost. And what do you get for your hard-earned cash? A pair of headphones that are essentially a rebranded version of what’s already out there.
But hey, at least the OnTrac have some impressive specs, right? Wrong. The 40mm speaker drivers are nothing special, and the active noise cancelation is just average. And don’t even get me started on the battery life, which is only impressive if you’re planning on listening to music for 55 hours straight without taking a break.
And then there’s the design. Oh boy, the design. The OnTrac look like they were designed by a committee of accountants trying to appeal to the lowest common denominator. The industrial design is clunky and unoriginal, and the various metal finishes and colorways are just a way to nickel-and-dime customers.
In short, the OnTrac are a disappointment. They’re a betrayal of Dyson’s commitment to innovation and a cash grab of the highest order. If you’re in the market for new headphones, do yourself a favor and look elsewhere.
