The paranoia was not entirely irrational on its face. They would switch languages the moment he walked in, glance over at his desk, laugh, whisper. From the outside, that reads like exactly what he thought it was. The problem is that he is introverted, a little closed off by his own admission, and apparently bringing the same tragic meal prep to work every single day, which had made him a figure of genuine concern rather than mockery. They were not gossiping about him. They were quietly trying to figure out how to help him without making things weird.

Two years. A tutor. An entirely Spanish digital life. All of it powered by what he now recognizes as a combination of paranoia and mild narcissism, the unshakeable conviction that the people around him were focused on his flaws rather than, as it turned out, his lunch.

But what makes this story genuinely perfect is its ending. He accepted the BBQ invite. He sat there eating carne asada and had to perform ignorance about a word he has known for eighteen months. He cannot tell them. He will never be able to tell them. He is now fluent in Spanish, has a new friend group, and is in possession of a secret so embarrassing that he will have to take with him to eternity, right next to his Duolingo streak and the ghost of his sad dry chicken.
