If Merry and Pippin can convince a sentient forest to systematically dismantle an industrialist war machine, you can get out of bed and tackle the day today.
In the wintertime, it’s so much harder to pry yourself from the warmth of the covers in the morning. Like Sam and Frodo using Elven cloaks for warmth and conserving water in the marshes of Emyn Mull, it’s as if the Nazgûl fly overhead and threaten your very existence if you crawl out from the safety of the covers. The bed calls to us, it’s cozy, comfortable, and precious. Preciousss…
However, LOTR fans must go out into the world.
Like hobbits who have grown too comfortable in the city of Hobbiton, there comes a time in everyone’s life when they must accept a quest from a grey-bearded wizard and go out into the world. Accept the adventures that come with discomfort, and go out into the Middle Earthien landscapes of elves, dwarves, orcs, and dark wizardry. For beyond the hills of Brie lie fellowship, honor, heroism, and the perfect lava flow for an epic end battle.
Alas, when it comes to good and evil, the choice is quite clear, and even as our comfy bed whispers dark nothings in our ears and tries to convince us to hit snooze and stay cozy, we must choose Good. Our task is easy: simply walk to Mordor, defy all odds, and destroy the Ring. Easy peasy.
But life isn’t about the end game; it’s about the journey. Sometimes fans must accept that the best stories arise from moments of severe outrage, fear, or discomfort, and even when Shelob’s lair is the darkest, the hero in all of us is poised to arise. So rise forth, brave hobbit, and enter the human world. For we do not know what lies beyond the front door for us today, but if we’re lucky, it’s 11 square meals, a warm bed at the Prancing Pony, and a healthy group of friends who will always have our backs.
