There are empty desks and emails from higher-ups with words of encouragement. But everyone knows things won’t be the same as before, and everyone is about to be stretched thin thanks to the lack of workers.
You’re glad you kept your job, but it’s a Ship of Theseus situation. Is this even the same job if you’re missing 40% of the entire workforce (and, as this person elaborates, 70% of her immediate team members were let go. That is… a choice! It will no longer be business as usual if you’re down 7/10 employees!).
You feel majorly guilty for staying behind. You stare blankly at your inbox and wonder, “Why did they choose him instead of me?” You wonder when your time will come. You might feel helpless to do anything other than apply to new jobs. But, as this brave employee proved, there is something you can do that’ll be as destabilizing to your employers as they were to you: just quit on the spot!
Now that is a bold move, and it’s not something that just everyone can do. If you have kids, or you care for your parents or something, you probably can’t afford to peace out of your current workplace. This person is extraordinarily brave for leaving, as you can read about in the story shared below. There were reasons for that worker to stay — namely, a huge raise!
