Some bosses feel entitled to their employee’s work all the time, rather than just during 9-5 hours. They want control over their free time, too. At some jobs, this is subtle, like implying that workers should be taking calls from clients at all hours.
Sometimes, it’s more overt, like directly scolding workers who take time off during “busy” seasons. If a company is competently run, it shouldn’t matter when an employee takes time off, because things happen. Whether it’s a worker calling out on the day of due to an emergency situation, or a worker giving several weeks or months advance notice, you’d hope that management would be able to find additional employees to cover that shift. And yet, some places are running on skeleton crews. They can’t afford to have even a single worker missing, or else operations slow down.
Workplaces like this are rarely a good place for top performers to thrive. When you’re being stretched thin but uncaring bosses, why would you want to stay there?
