Should landlords know everything that goes on in a place they rent to other people?

As a renter myself, there are plenty of things I do around my home that I would not want my landlord to know about. My cats have scratched big chunks of our bedroom door, we drill holes in walls we definitely should not have touched, and don’t get me started on some of the “renter-friendly” cosmetic changes we made that are definitely not renter-friendly.

When the time comes to leave, I just hope that we will be able to fix most things, and that our landlord won’t notice the things we won’t. All we need is our safety deposit back, and we will be out of there as fast as possible.

That being said, if we were a disturbance to our neighbors, I would not have been surprised if one of them contacted our landlord to let him know about it. After all, the landlord is the authority figure in a property, and ensuring the people they rent the property to are decent to those around them is a must. If the renters cause damage to homes around them, they should not be allowed to keep renting, which is why the landlord in this story, posted on r/EntitledPeople, will not be renewing his contract with his current renters.

These renters decided to get an inflatable water slide for their children, but decided to empty the water onto their neighbors’ garden, completely ruining their flowers in the process. Since they didn’t really show any remorse, the neighbors contacted the renters’ landlord and informed him of the issue, which led the landlord to ban his renter from using the water slide again. The renters blamed the neighbors for the ban and decided to knock on the neighbors’ door and demand to use their pool instead. They claimed the neighbors “owe it to them”, since they were the ones who got the water slide banned.

Safe to say, this warranted another call to the landlord, who realized that he needs a change in the people who live on his property…
