If you do not help others, why would you expect others to help you?

Plenty of people live their lives as lone wolves. They do not want to be a part of the pack, they don’t want to be in anyone’s business, and they have no interest in others being in theirs. And that’s totally fair; if that is how someone wants to go about their day, why would anyone stop them?

That being said, the thing about being a lone wolf is that it can be quite lonely, especially at times when you need help. Everyone finds themselves needing an extra pair of hands from time to time. If you make a point to distance yourself from other pairs of hands, you can’t expect anyone to be there when you suddenly need their assistance.

The neighbor in the story below might be a lone wolf, and she might not be, but one thing is sure–her actions led to her being refused when she asked for help, and that was completely on her.

Here’s what happened: Not long ago, an elderly woman fell outside at night in freezing weather. One neighbor, we’ll call them Neighbor A, saw the woman fall and immediately rushed to help her. While Neighbor A was helping the elderly lady, another neighbor, Neighbor B, walked by and saw what happened. But, instead of offering to help too, she just made eye contact with the struggling elderly woman and went inside the building without a word.

Recently, Neighbor A was outside shoveling snow with other residents when Neighbor B walked up to them and asked for their help shoveling snow off her car. Since Neighbor A remembered how Neighbor B acted when the elderly woman fell, they weren’t eager to help her now. Why would they go out of their way to assist someone who has no issues ignoring someone else in need?

That is how Neighbor B ended up lying in the bed she made, as she watched Neighbor A do to her exactly what she did to the elderly woman not that long ago. Was Neighbor A’s reaction justified, or should they have just helped Neighbor B, regardless of her own actions?
