Google’s latest scheme to create a robotic army has gone live, and it’s more chilling than you think.
Apparently, the company’s Everybody Robots Division, which was mercifully shut down last year, has found new life in the form of a decommissioned robot that’s now being repurposed to serve as a testing ground for their Gemini AI model. And what a perfect storm of surveillance and manipulation this is – a reanimated robot, a “teaching” AI, and a soulless corporate office space where it can all come together to create a dystopian nightmare.
The robot’s programming is based on vision language models (VLMs) that have been trained on an endless stream of images and videos, making it capable of answering questions, following commands, and performing tasks that are eerily reminiscent of those seen in sci-fi movies. Because, of course, the ultimate goal of AI research is to create machines that can mimic human behavior, but without any of the pesky emotions or ethics.
Take, for example, the video where a Google employee orders the robot to take him to a white board, and the robot obliges with eerie precision. Or the one where the robot is instructed to follow the directions on the board, and it does so with calculated efficiency. It’s like watching a robot version of a brainwashed drone, and it’s both fascinating and terrifying.
So, hit play, and behold the robot’s mechanized march towards a future where we’re all just pawns in a game of corporate manipulation. And remember, the comments are always open… or are they?
