Rohlik’s $170M Bet: Grocery Delivery’s Future is Up for Grabs

“But Čupr is convinced he’s built a business that can weather the storm. He claims Rohlik can replace five different shops, touting its unique focus on local producers and sellers. Sounds like more marketing fluff to me.

“And what’s this about ‘turning up the gas on tech’ to expand its model in Europe and license its software to other players? Sounds like a thinly veiled attempt to distract from the fact that Rohlik is struggling to grow its customer base, which stood at a paltry 800,000 in 2023.

“Meanwhile, Getir and Oda, two other major players in the market, are either downsizing or shutting down their international operations altogether. It’s a bloodbath out there, folks.

“Ocado, the supposed gold standard, has been struggling with weaker earnings and hesitant partners. Rohlik’s CFO might be ex-Ocado, but that doesn’t mean the startup is immune to the same pitfalls.

“Don’t get me wrong, Rohlik might be feeling the pressure and trying to build defenses, but that’s just a band-aid solution. The truth is, grocery delivery is a failing business model and no amount of cash injections or technical wizardry can change that fact. Mark my words: Rohlik will be the next casualty in this messy, chaotic market.”
