Roku has just launched a stealth attack on your TV, and there’s no escape.
On June 6th, a sinister update to the Roku OS was unleashed upon the world, specifically targeting TCL TVs. Since then, a plague of motion smoothing has spread, infecting every show and movie you watch. There is no antidote, no way to turn it off, no mercy.
Roku’s latest abomination is called “Roku Smart Picture,” a feature that promises to “improve picture quality dynamically as users stream.” But what it really does is create a fake sense of motion, making every scene look like a poorly-made video game. And the worst part? It’s impossible to opt out, even if you’re a die-hard TV and film purist who knows that motion smoothing is an abomination.
Many have tried to resist, to fight back against this motion smoothing monstrosity, but it’s too late. The damage is done. Your TV is now a slave to Roku’s algorithm, forced to render every frame with a fake sense of fluidity. You’re trapped, and there’s no escape.
