Give them an inch, and they take a mile. Or that is just the saying, at least.

A family member realizes that you need some help, so they offer for you to stay with them for free till you get back on your feet. You don’t have to contribute to anything. No food, no services, no bills. It goes so far that you don’t even have to do house chores such as washing dishes or cleaning, because they know you are going through a lot and they prefer you to concentrate on school. Time goes on, and 6 years go by. You finish school and have a job, but you continue to live with the family because supposedly, you still have some debts with school and car loans. They don’t expect anything from you, except that you help out a little by doing more chores than just washing your clothes and making your bed. Let’s remember, you don’t even buy food for the house. You are living 100% for free. You say that you cannot be expected to do more as you already have too much to do.

This family member who was so nice letting you live with them for 6 years and never expected anything in return gets annoyed. You could be more helpful at home. They start talking to your parents, saying how annoyed they are that you can’t even do chores, as they are not expecting anything else because they know the financial burden you currently have. All that only to discover that your parents are the ones paying for your loans, and you just spend your money buying things you like and eating out with your boyfriend, who, by the way, is also telling you that you need to cut back on spending.

Now you put the whole family in a weird place where they will need to kick you out, all because you weren’t kind enough to appreciate the effort everyone was doing for you and show some gratitude by simply doing chores or paying the wifi. Maybe we get some different options on this story below, but it seems really clear to me. What would you do in this situation? Do you know some entitled people that would take advantage of someone’s kindness like this? Would you ever act like this?
