THE VAAL DAM IS BLEEDING. While officials tout “stability” and “robust performance,” the shocking truth is that our most critical water source is being DRAINED in plain sight.

The dam sits at a deceptive 101%. But look closer: On Wednesday, it was hemorrhaging 21.4 cubic meters of water EVERY SECOND out to the Barrage. That’s a controlled outflow while massive inflows of 78.3 m³/s pour in. They are deliberately letting precious water go.

This isn’t stability—it’s a controlled bleed. Last year at this time, the dam was at a desperate 61%. Now, after a life-saving rainy season, the system is being aggressively managed, sending water downstream while the upstream dams like Grootdraai (102.1%) and even Lesotho’s Mohale Dam (101.8%) are bursting. WHERE IS ALL THAT WATER GOING?

Who benefits? Massive agricultural interests downstream. Industrial users. A system prioritizing everything BUT securing water for the people of Gauteng for the inevitable next drought. The so-called “integrated system” is a smokescreen for redistribution away from the population centers that need it most.

They are emptying the cup while the tap is still running, leaving us vulnerable the moment the rains stop.

They are watering the desert while preparing your city for another day zero.
