Although this is absolutely a conversation that could have been handled behind closed doors, the cousin must be put in his place publicly, especially if he was going to go around the office badmouthing him.

It’s one thing to make jokes every now and then, but it’s another to genuinely disparage a coworker and beloved family member. The aunt may have had a point, but she wasn’t there in the office when everyone started looking down on this man’s work ethic. Just because he wasn’t working above and beyond his 9-5 work requirement doesn’t mean he’s a bad employee. 

So to set the record straight, this guy just revealed the truth. It’s as simple as that.
