The Insane, Budget-Busting, Triple Screen Abomination: Huawei Unleashes the Mate XT Ultimate Design
After mercilessly teasing us for weeks, Huawei has officially launched the world’s most unnecessary, overpriced, and indulgent trio of screens, the Mate XT Ultimate Design. A whopping 19,999 yuan (approximately $28,900) for a 256GB storage model? That’s roughly a small fortune, and comparable to the cost of three brand-new 16-inch MacBook Pros.
All nine lives of the Mate XT pack 16GB of RAM, with additional storage variant options available for the indulgent: 21,999 yuan (about $31,900) for 512GB and 23,999 yuan (about $34,700) for 1TB. Has anyone ever preordered more than 3.7 million units of a budget-busting phone before asking for it? Of course not, as exemplified by Chinese retailer Vmall’s record-breaking reserve.
This behemoth comes equipped with an inverse dual-hinge design that warps into a "Z" shape, allowing us to use it in novel ways, like pretending this monstrosity makes sense. The OLED displays measure 6.4-inches when collapsed to a single screen, like a traditional phone. Unless you unfold it, adding 3.88 times the screen real estate into the mix, because balance is overrated. Finally, there’s a fully unfolded 10.2-inch configuration, and somehow, it still functions well when partially unfurled in a smaller 7.9-inch setup that defies the laws of physics.
A feast for the eyes, a reckoning for the wallet. The Mate XT dishes out a 5,600mAh battery, just enough to power the power-hungry displays to oblivion. QuickCharging? Sure! There’s 66W via wire and 50W wirelessly, just ask the bank manager to facilitate the transaction. For selfies, the 8 megapixel hole-punch cameras on the left-most screens will capture your utter bemusement. And the quad-camera setup on the rear? A 50MP main camera, 12MP ultrawide and periscope, what’s the point, does anyone really need that, and how will it photograph the impending financial ruin as you stare at this digital monstrosity.
