Look at the actual ask here. One favor is a favor. Two in the same day, upgraded from a request to “you will HAVE to,” is a demand wearing a favor’s clothes. That shift matters. The moment “can you help me” turns into an order, the relationship stops being about kindness and starts being about leverage, and leverage only works because there’s a job title backing it up.

Then there’s the toll money. Eight dollars isn’t a lot, but the refusal to pay it back wasn’t about cash on hand, it was about a total lack of interest in reciprocity. “I don’t have cash” isn’t an answer when Venmo, Cash App, and five other options exist. That’s not an excuse, that’s a decision that someone else’s gas tank is simply not her problem.

The bigger tell is the history. Trainings run, documents managed, meetings covered, all without so much as an acknowledgment, over years. That’s not an oversight, that’s a system. Somewhere along the way, “help” quietly turned into an unpaid, unthanked job description, and the only reason it kept working is that saying no to a supervisor feels riskier than it should.

The hints about needing more rides aren’t subtle, they’re a test to see if the free labor pipeline still works. Recognizing that and refusing to bite isn’t selfish. It’s just someone finally noticing that one-sided generosity was never generosity to begin with, it was just a boss getting comfortable never having to ask nicely.
