Back when I was with my first boyfriend, I remember keeping a diary. One day, we went to the beach, and my diary stayed there, unguarded, right on top of the light table. It seems that my mother-in-law was very bored that day, so she got curious and started reading it. In there, she found out about a couple of irrelevant crushes I had here and there, with whom I didn’t plan on doing anything, and also about the doubts I had in my relationship with her son. The woman went into protective mode, and when we got from the beach, she put him aside and told him everything. My then boyfriend stood there, devastated and ashamed because on top of what he had to hear, our entire intimacy was revealed to no less than his own MOTHER!. In the end, that broke our relationship apart, not in the moment, we tried for another year, but we were young and inexperienced, and the breach of trust it meant for both of us (somebody had read my most intimate thoughts, and he had to hear things he was never supposed to) was something we could never recover from. I tell this story because it was an example of things I said only to express them. I wrote in my diary on the days I was completely mad at him, for example, that wasn’t the whole picture, so it was very unfair to read something like that and feel like that was the truth and that I was hiding it. I’m not sure if this is the case for them, but I think it deserves some further investigation.
