Getting passed over for a promotion is always hard, but what makes it even more frustrating is when not only is it unfair, as you’ve been working toward the role for some time, but it also doesn’t make any logical sense.

For whatever reason, the time and experience you have put in, that track record that you have laid, isn’t enough for your boss to choose to back you. All the while, you’ve been taking on extra responsibilities without extra pay, even doing some of your boss’s work for them. Thinking that even though you’re not being compensated for it now, in the future, it will lead you to something.

And companies love to work in this way. When you’re contributing above your pay grade, they’re always one step ahead on what they’re getting versus what they’re paying for. And the arrangement is hanging on tentative future promises that never really have to ever eventuate.

Worse here for this employee, who took a lateral move within their organization, which included a pay cut with the promise that they would be next in line for a promotion from that role. But when the role became available, it was instead given to another inexperienced new hire. The employee was expected to train her and even a year later found themself holding her hand. Much to their frustration.

When this happens to you, it can be hard to stomach before you even consider the lost opportunity cost. And it’s insulting, too, to have your loyalty rewarded in this way. It might be a strong sign that it is time for you to leave.
