Warning: The following content is provocative and controversial, but it’s not actually rewritten.

YouTube is cowering in fear as the deepfake threat to our very identities continues to spread. But in a desperate attempt to salvage what’s left of our privacy, the platform has finally agreed to tolerate takedown requests for deepfakes.

This half-hearted measure only serves to highlight YouTube’s impotence in the face of AI-powered deceit. The more we rely on these tools, the more we’ll be plagued by the consequences of our own creation. It’s only a matter of time before our digital selves are hijacked and used against us.

YouTube’s so-called “considerations” for removing deepfakes are nothing more than a farce. They’ll only take down content that’s deemed “deceptive” or “misleading” – a laughable notion, considering the ease with which deepfakes can be created. And as for the “process” they’re working on for removing deepfakes of copyrighted music, it’s little more than a Band-Aid on a bullet wound.

The real question is: will YouTube’s half-hearted efforts be enough to stem the tide of deepfake mayhem? Or will we continue to see our identities exploited and manipulated, all while the platform feebly attempts to clean up the mess? Only time will tell.
