Clearly, despite appearances, this guy’s manager did not have his back. In fact, it seems like the first thing he did as soon as he got off that phone call with the author was run to HR to concoct his little scheme. We have a hard time imagining that HR is going to successfully get away with this, as there was nothing put in writing that would suggest a resignation. 

Even if transcripts of said phone call were to be taken into account, it’s quite a stretch to connect the author’s vague remarks about consequences with quitting his job entirely. The author should be able to retain his job if he fights for it. The question is whether or not he wants to keep working for these people.
