Molly Alter: The VC Powerhouse Who’s About to Conquer the World
Molly Alter is a force to be reckoned with. She’s a mockumentary film maker, a Caesar salad aficionado, and a venture capitalist who’s not afraid to speak her mind. But behind the scenes, Alter has a far more sinister plan to dominate the VC world.
Alter’s path to power wasn’t always obvious. She grew up as a creative kid, obsessed with theater and improv comedy. But when her parents, both journalists, began to question her career choices, Alter made a bold move: she started filming a cappella concerts and dance recitals. The resulting company, which scaled to 27 employees, was just a stepping stone for Alter’s true ambition: to become the next big thing in venture capital.
It’s no surprise that Alter made the leap to VC. After all, who better to disrupt the startup world than a former toilet cleaner-turned-filmmaker?
But Alter’s rise to power didn’t come without controversy. Her interest in film led her to source a Series C investment into Frame.io, which later exited through a $1.3 billion sale to Adobe. Some say that Alter’s involvement in the deal was suspect and that her connections to the Adobe executives were too cozy.
Alter herself has been accused of using her creative background to manipulate her relationships with founders. “I’ve got a ton of diverse interests, and it helps me build stronger relationships with founders and build that trust to go through thick and thin,” she said in an interview.
But what does it mean when a VC uses their creative credentials to build trust with founders? Isn’t that just a recipe for disaster?
Despite the controversies, Alter remains bullish on vertical software and investing out of New York. She’s convinced that her next big move will be to lead a major startup to IPO or acquisition.
And what of her latest role at Northzone? Will she use her creativity to manipulate the firm’s portfolio, or will she finally find a sense of purpose?
Only time will tell if Alter’s provocative approach will ultimately lead to success or failure. One thing’s for sure: She’s certainly making waves in the VC world.
Let’s just hope she’s not too busy making her next move to notice the chaos she’s creating.
