Get ready to choke down the toxic swamp that is Netflix’s attempt to go live with some disgusting chicken wings. Bloomberg and Variety are reporting that Netflix is in secret negotiations with BuzzFeed to peddle live versions of the grotesque YouTube show “Hot Ones”, where A-list celebrities sacrifice their dignity and taste buds to indulge in an endurance test of scorching hot wings and forced interviews. Netflix’s desperate move is an insult to humanity and a desecration of the great medium of television. But hey, who doesn’t love watching strangers cry themselves to sleep while consuming infernal spiciness? Bloomberg and Variety report that Netflix is set to finalize this atrocity by the end of the month. How far have we sunk as a society that this is the entertainment we opt for? Is it even entertainment?
Both Netflix and BuzzFeed refused to comment, because what can they possibly say in defense of this trainwreck? Will we have to witness yet another train of taste-bud-bashing, emotionally-abusive hot wing enthusiasts masquerading as celebrities, for the sake of clicks and eyeballs?
Update, September 13th: And there’s the response: total radio silence. Just as I expected. A healthy dose of apathy is probably the most charitable thing anyone can offer for this egregious display of pop cultural ignorance. Meanwhile, our dignity continues to crumble.
