HTC’s Latest Headset Announced: Because Gamers Need Another Obsession in Their Lives
In the latest attempt to part VR enthusiasts from their hard-earned cash, HTC has unveiled the Vive Focus Vision, a pretentious title for a new headset that promises to blow minds – or at the very least, blow bank accounts to smithereens.
Clocking in at a jaw-dropping $999, this behemoth of a headset boasts color passthrough, foveated rendering, and PC tethering support, among other frivolous features designed to milk gamers for all they’re worth. "Now, PC gamers can bring the same high-end headsets used in VR arcades into their homes," says Shen Ye, HTC Vive’s global head of product. Because what gamer wouldn’t want to dump their spare change into yet another tech gimmick?
The specs are as dizzying as the price tag: the Focus Vision touts the same 2448 x 2448 per-eye resolution and 120-degree field of view as the Focus 3, along with a beefed-up Snapdragon XR2 chip. That’s not to mention dual 16MP cameras that promise to adjust the lenses to compensate for the distance between your eyeballs. Yep, because nobody likes awkwardly-placed VR visions.
Gamers will need to shell out the requisite amount of dosh not only for the headset but also for PC VR streaming adapters, controllers, and the obligatory slew of questionable game bundles tossed in "as a value-added item." Anyone who pre-orders before October 17th will receive a free gift bag containing an array of accessories, including a fancy USB-C cable and (presumably) a voucher for a participation trophy from HTC.
Can the latest iteration of VR headset impress? Will anyone care as long as there’s eye candy to munch on while waiting for their wallet to recoup from the purchase?
Only time will tell.
