The math only works if employees agree to play along. Clocking in for a party is the tell. A real gift doesn’t require you to still be on the clock, doesn’t dock your lunch break, doesn’t come with a mandatory RSVP disguised as a celebration. Somebody in HR ran a calendar invite through the same system they use for compliance training, which tells you exactly what bucket this falls into.

Cold pepperoni becomes a kind of confession. The order shows up wrong, half the boxes are missing toppings nobody ordered, and there’s never enough to go around, which mirrors the actual distribution of the record profits being celebrated. Forty people fighting over six boxes is just the org chart made edible.

The email is doing the heaviest lifting of all. “Proud of the team,” “couldn’t have done it without you,” phrases that cost nothing to type and nothing to mean. Executives get to feel generous for the price of an adjective, then log off to a vacation home paid for by the same quarter they’re thanking you for.

Rent doesn’t care about morale initiatives. Grocery bills don’t respond to a Slack GIF of applause. The gap between what a company says you’re worth and what it pays you to prove it keeps widening, and pizza is just the wallpaper they put up to cover the crack. Every employee who’s sat through one of these lunches already knows the difference between being thanked and being paid, and no amount of extra cheese closes that gap
