What is wrong with people and friendships lately?
It seems that we’ve reached a point where even the most natural expression of human emotion is read as inappropriate or something that should be contained and restricted, even between friends.
A girl expressed her worry about being “too emotional” at her friend’s wedding on r/AITH. She was happy for her friend, so during the wedding vows, she started tearing up. A few days later, she received an angry message from the bride, saying that her crying had ruined her wedding photos, that she was an attention seeker who had stolen her spotlight, and that she should control herself better.
With friends like that, who needs enemies? Weddings are a huge milestone to achieve, and a very emotional moment for all friends and family, not just for the bride and groom. Crying is only a natural reaction to a very special moment. It’s both out of tremendous joy and also out of mourning of a previous life.
When a friend of ours gets married, we all feel ecstatic that she found her match in this crazy world. But we also know that her priorities and lifestyle will change, and our relationship with her will not be the same. It is a completely normal and natural thing that it happens that way. The tears are bittersweet, but they’re honest and come from the deepest kind of love there is.
Crying, or at least tearing up, at a best friend’s wedding is never with the purpose of stealing her spotlight; it’s just a natural feeling that we exteriorize in the only way we have. We’re not making a scandal, and I highly doubt that this friend was sobbing loudly or inappropriately. Otherwise, someone would have said something at the moment.
Pristine, perfect photos are pretty, but the ones that transmit the most sentiment are the ones where you can actually see what people are feeling, and those are the ones that will transport us to that very same moment in twenty years. Being emotional doesn’t ruin a photo; it brings back to life an otherwise plain image. If the friend cannot understand that, maybe she’s not the right person to keep close. Showing emotion is what makes us human, and no one should ask their loved ones to forsake their humanity.
