California’s Supreme Court Just Dealt a Crushing Blow to the Future of Fair Labor

In a move that’s been met with widespread outrage and concern, the California Supreme Court has ruled that Proposition 22, the ballot measure that enshrined the gig economy’s exploitation of workers, will remain intact. This decision cements the notion that Silicon Valley’s powerful app-based companies – Uber, Lyft, DoorDash, and Instacart – can continue to dodge their responsibilities as employers, treating workers as disposable commodities rather than human beings with dignity and respect.

The court’s decision effectively kills off any hopes of workers being recognized as employees entitled to basic rights, including a living wage, healthcare, and workers’ compensation. Instead, drivers and delivery workers will remain relegated to the scraps, forced to struggle to make ends meet on meager earnings and uncertainty.

The companies behind Prop 22, who collectively spent over $200 million to convince California voters that their interests were the same as those of gig workers, will continue to reap the benefits of their asset-light models, built on the backs of overworked and underpaid workers.

Meanwhile, the California legislature’s attempts to protect workers through Assembly Bill 5, which would have required the companies to classify gig workers as employees, are being rendered irrelevant. The consequences of this decision will be felt far and wide, as workers continue to suffer at the hands of corporate greed and exploitation.

It’s a dark day for the future of fair labor in California, and a devastating blow to the already fragile well-being of gig workers who have been left in the lurch by a system that seems designed to crush their spirits and drain their pockets.
