Companies love the word unfortunately. It does a lot of heavy lifting in situations where the more accurate word would be negligently.

This story here is a masterclass in corporate informality working entirely in one direction. The intern works outside contracted hours, covers overnight shifts, and helps in hazardous areas, all on the basis of verbal agreements and the general understanding that everyone was cool with it. When it came time to extend the contract, the company confirmed it repeatedly over text, got it signed, and then two weeks later sent a calendar invite that turned out to be an ambush with a coordinator who had clearly never heard the phrase we already signed that.
