While it is incredibly frustrating to see someone get praised at work for her performative competence, there is an unfortunate lesson to be learned here. We would all like to think that those in charge are grounded enough to tell who is actually good at their job and who isn’t. However, the vast majority of the time, what they are focusing on is metrics and optics.
This employee’s coworker may have been taking credit for other people’s work constantly, but if she was doing one thing right, she was clearly finding a way to show upper management that she cared about the team’s success. Sure, it’s annoying. She should not be getting extra points for co-opting other people’s accomplishments, and maybe one day that will come back to haunt her.
In the meantime, however, it would behoove the employee to find her own way of showing her clueless boss just how hard she is working.
