The Death Knell of Innovation: How Google’s Made by Google 2024 Event Proves The Industry is Doomed
In a shocking display of laziness, Google’s Made by Google 2024 event has revealed a slate of unimaginative, uninspired products that do absolutely nothing to push the boundaries of innovation.
With a focus on AI (because, of course, that’s where all the excitement is), Google launched a series of products that promised more of the same, only without the excitement. The Pixel 9 lineup, for example, offers nothing more than slightly better cameras and the presence of Gemini AI, which is about as interesting as a plain cracker. Meanwhile, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold’s biggest innovation is its foldability, which is just a rehashed, less impressive version of the Apple iPhone’s foldable feature. (Apple, of course, didn’t even bother to show up.)
And don’t even get me started on the Google TV Streamer, the de facto replacement for the beloved (and now deceased) Chromecast line. This "smart home hub" is nothing more than a rebranded version of the same old Chromecast dongle, with the added bonus of requiring users to set up a separate interface just to control their streaming preferences. (Because, you know, asking users to do extra work is really what innovation is all about.)
It’s clear that Google has lost sight of what makes innovation exciting – creating new, groundbreaking products that actually inspire people. Instead, they’re just copying the same old formulas we’ve seen before, with the expectation that we’ll be impressed by minor tweaks and the presence of AI technology (because, of course, everything is better with AI).
