I don’t really see the issue here; maybe if he acted really impolite about it, or left very angry without giving too many explanations, I can see why a family would interpret it as rude, but otherwise, if I were there I would be like: ‘Totally, please go, It doesn’t matter, we’ll meet you in an hour, or get takeout and meet us at x’. Maybe the family was a bit too formal in their manners? It happens; my family on my dad’s side considers many things disrespectful that I would’ve never in a million years noticed just because I come from a different background. Not many people are open-minded like that. I do find it funny that it stings so much that he’s asking people on the internet for opinions, lol.
