Ursula Gomez SERVED HER TIME. After 24 years behind bars, earning a degree and transforming her life, California’s Department of Corrections didn’t release her. In a STUNNING act of betrayal, they SHACKLED her and sold her to ICE. For 11 months, she was shipped between detention centers, her spirit breaking, until the looming threat of Trump’s mass deportations forced her to “agree” to be banished to Mexico—a country she fled at age five. “I have no ties there. Over 18,000 souls have been funneled from California prisons to ICE since 2015. The criteria? A name. An accent. The color of one’s skin. This is RACIAL PROFILING sanctioned by the state.
The consequences are CHILLING. Incarcerated people, terrified of ICE’s brutal detention camps, are now REFUSING PAROLE, deliberately extending their sentences to avoid a fate worse than prison. Others, like one man whose conviction was VACATED, find ICE’s order still hangs over him, a ghost of a crime that no longer exists. This system doesn’t care about justice, rehabilitation, or family. Governor Gavin Newsom VETOED legislation that would have stopped this atrocity, hiding behind empty rhetoric of “public safety” while destroying lives.
