Some bonds are meant to be broken…
A Reddit user shared on /r/AITH a situation that reached a fever pitch much faster than she thought. Her parents and sister were visiting, and she tends to have issues with her sister, so they’ve been quarreling for some time. The sister’s boyfriend tends to act disrespectfully; the sister does the same and apparently also makes mean comments about her sister and her money. They have fought many times but never solve the issue, and the parents don’t seem to be helping. During this visit, things got even more complicated. They were fighting over all the same things they fight about, until the woman who shared the story shoved her sister in the middle of the argument. Nothing more happened then, but the next morning they kept fighting. Their parents ended up calling the authorities, which made everything more complicated. The sister has never apologized, but the parents took her side after the fight. The woman acknowledges that shoving her wasn’t right, but that doesn’t erase all the years of unfinished business and entitled behavior from her sister that led to that situation.
Cutting off family is one of the hardest things to do. But in this case, it was necessary. There had been issues for a long time before everything exploded, and no matter how much it hurts, we have to prioritize our peace of mind and set our boundaries straight. The sister could no longer behave the way she was doing, and the parents weren’t helping or being fair to their daughters. No one should be disrespected in their own house.
The relationship between sisters is one of the most complicated ones. Sometimes, even without realizing it, parents promote competition between their daughters, leading them to turn against one another during adolescence and even adulthood. Repairing that bond is an arduous task that not many people can take on, and in this case, it doesn’t sound like it will be happening any time soon. Let’s just all hope that someday these sisters will reconcile and find each other again.
