The AI boom is nothing short of a water-guzzling monster, and we’re complicit. The insatiable demand for data centers is draining our planet’s vital resource, and we’re not even considering the consequences. The cooling system is the culprit, using an outrageous amount of water to keep those fancy machines running. And don’t even get us started on the “water stress” zones where Microsoft and Google are making a killing. In 2023 alone, Microsoft devoured 42% of its water supply in “water-stressed” areas. Google, the self-proclaimed pioneer of innovation, proudly boasted that 15% of its freshwater withdrawals came from areas with “high water scarcity.” What a joke.
