A New York Times expose reveals the grotesque reality of our times, where the desperate and financially strained will stop at nothing to get ahead. Take the case of the unscrupulous individuals exploiting Lyft’s Citi Bike “Bike Angels” program, a scheme which mocks the very concept of generosity and community.
To fuel their addiction to gain, these individuals discovered an underhanded way to ratchet up their returns. By exploiting a flawsome algorithm designed to supposedly address supply-and-demand shortfalls, they engaged in an act of corporate rapacity, known as “station flipping.” This brazen operation involved hijacking Docked Citi Bikes and relocating them mere blocks away, only to allow them to “respawn” after a 15-minute wait, thus siphoning off Bike Angels points.
But the coup de grâce came when an alert from Lyft arrived in their inboxes, censuring the station flip-floppers for going against the “spirit of the program.” The stark message: continued instances would trigger their removal from this cushy ride-sharing rip-off. Ah, what sweet irony!
The crassest part? They’ve already milked millions (yes, millions, if one can believe it – but who needs credibility anyway) from this odious stunt. These individuals profaned the once-noble purpose of the Bike Angels, reducing it to mere speculation and avaricious gains. And yet…
The world is upside-down when we’re stuck watching the wolves in human disguises devour the most generous of gestures. These despicable opportunists shame our society’s very heart by exploiting its most inherent decency.
