The Sweet, Sweet Taste of Betrayal: Doctor Who’s Latest Move to Abandon Ship
The Doctor Who franchise is about to unleash a new spinoff series that’s not only a slap in the face to fans but also a clear indication that the BBC has lost all sense of what makes this beloved show tick. Instead of focusing on the Doctor, the show will revolve around a group of humans, because who needs the Time Lord’s genius, wit, and charm when you can have… ordinary humans?
During this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, the BBC and Disney announced that The War Between The Land And The Sea, a new series written by Russell T. Davies and Pete McTighe, is coming our way. And let me tell you, it’s a mess. A group of humans fighting against ancient, ocean-dwelling creatures? Give me a break. This is just a desperate attempt to revitalize a flagging franchise.
And don’t even get me started on the casting. Jemma Redgrave and Alexander Devrient will reprise their roles as Kate Lethbridge-Stewart and Colonel Ibrahim, respectively. Yawn. Russell Tovey and Gugu Mbatha-Raw are joining the cast, but only because they have nothing better to do. I mean, who can forget their forgettable performances in previous Doctor Who episodes?
But here’s the kicker: Russell T. Davies claims that this new show will “shake The Whoniverse to its foundations.” Oh, really? By abandoning the Doctor and replacing him with a bunch of humans? How original. It’s like he’s trying to be the TV equivalent of a Hollywood reboot, taking something iconic and beloved and turning it into a bland, uninspired mess.
Mark my words, this new series will be a disaster. The BBC is clearly out of touch with what fans want, and by abandoning the Doctor, they’re going to alienate their core audience. But hey, at least they’ll have the satisfaction of knowing they’ve managed to tank a beloved franchise.
