On a technical level, it is good to know what your fellow colleagues are making. In theory, it could be a bargaining chip for you, should you ever decide you want to be brave enough to ask your employer for a raise. I can’t help but feel that that kind of logic is out of date, though. Today’s employers want to pay people as little as possible.Â
If you strolled into their office and told them that you know your coworker is making more than you and you want more money too, they could easily just fire you for getting on their nerves.Â
However, it’s still probably good to know what you’re being paid versus what your contemporaries are making. That way you have a better understanding of your place in the job market. You can also plan for a career path, envisioning a career timeline where you grow into supervisory roles and make far more than you do currently.Â
So, let’s read this employees’ POV and see what we think: would you want to know this coworker’s salary?
